A shared garden on the MSU Zagreb plateau, conceived as a space of encounter, care, and collective action

The collective spatial installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb was realised in collaboration with a community brought together through an open call.

The project of a shared community garden on the museum’s plateau was developed within the framework of Andreja Kulunčić’s retrospective exhibition To Make the World a Better Place (15 May – 12 October 2025), and has continued beyond the closing of the exhibition as an open structure that functions outside the exhibition framework through the practice of collective gardening and collective action.

Throughout her artistic practice, Andreja Kulunčić has consistently worked on creating spaces for the development of social relations, strengthening communal practices, and empowering individuals through the concepts of collectiveness, care, and reciprocity.

Museum Garden / Edible Museum is a new production created within the context of the retrospective of her work. As in her previous projects, the local context plays a key role in the creation of the work.

The artist conceives a social space that blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior of the museum, opening up possibilities for experimenting with the idea of the commons.

The project involves engaging with the museum edifice’s architecture and its unused spaces – the platforms and terraces. In this process, the museum assumes the role of a social agent: it becomes porous, connects with the surrounding neighbourhood, and opens up a space for the creation of togetherness at a time of intense individualisation and social fragmentation.

The garden is not merely conceived as a space for rest or conversation, but rather as a place where the shared practice of gardening, with both decorative and edible  plants, cultivates a sense of responsibility and care.
